GETTING INVOLVED!

I am founder and president of Santa Fe College’s feminist club, Gender Rights and Liberation. Our goal is to educate students about feminism, to not confuse feminism with radical feminism (which excludes and degrades men), and to form alliances to break down socially constructed gender issues and roles. The club contributes to the community through service projects, such as donating clothes to hospitals that care for sexual assault survivors and providing free and easily accessible menstruation supplies to help students, especially low-income and homeless, avoid embarrassment and humiliation.

SF2UF Bridge to Baccalaureate Program
This newly funded program called SF2UF, in which both SF and UF collaborate, opened these doors of opportunity for me to gain the vital experiences necessary for research. The program is designed to increase the amount of underrepresented students from minority groups who plan on transferring from SF to UF and graduate with a baccalaureate degree in either biomedical or behavioral sciences. Over the next three years, I will be performing full-time and part-time research side-by-side with scientists at UF, provided mentoring and training, and will be earning pay as a bonus.

As a Santa Fe Student Life activities aid, I was in charge of multiple tasks at every event held for the student body. For example, I have had to serve food to +200 students and faculty. Another responsibility of mine was creating the surveys distributed at the events and compiling the data afterwards for statistical purposes. Also, it was necessary that I contributed ideas, which were then carried out through our events. The goal was to always create an event that allowed SF students to network, connect with others, and to develop a sense of belonging at our college, which in turn encourages students to get even more involved with the college and community.

Student Government & Psychology Club
@ Santa Fe
The purpose of this organization is to provide an opportunity for students of Santa Fe College to learn and further explore their interests in the field and study of psychology. Throughout Spring term 2016, I served as the club’s Senator. For Fall 2016 and Spring 2017, I served as its Vice President and Senate representative. It is my responsibility to work closely with the president to ensure that the club continues to stay promoted on all social media and help oversee that all officers and members are contributing at meetings and fundraisers.
As the senator representative of the Psychology Club, my duty is to represent the club and the student body at Santa Fe’s weekly Senate meetings under Student Government. At our Senate meetings, we exercise our right to expression and address any issues or concerns for the improvement of the college and community. We cooperate to provide solutions through the formulation of policies such as bills and resolutions.

As an active member of PTK, some of my responsibilities are to attend our monthly meetings, participate in service opportunities, provide feedback to the president and their cabinet that will help reach out to more students, and helping other members with their service projects. I have helped PTK with multiple tabling events—where I was given the opportunity to inform many students about our club. Additionally, I have also donated to drives. Through our service, we promote integrity, goodwill, and peace.

Rotaract Club of Gainesville, a worldwide service club whose aim is to involve youth in their local and international communities and the purpose of the St. Francis House is to provide shelter, food, and comfort to aid the homeless people in the Gainesville community, including families with children. The St. Francis House provides children with donated toys from annual toy drives and a small park within the premises of the facility. However, due to inefficient funding, the park has not been open to children because of poor maintenance. . Our monthly service project is to address this issue by transforming the park. All members have met two to three times a month to remove any safety hazards in the park and to come up with professional designs and blueprints for the future park. Additionally, we have also been creating and collecting safe as well as appropriate toys for the children. The goal is to finish by December 2016 before Christmas.

I serve on the committee as a student representative and therefore, have the responsibility of representing the voice of the student body. The Activity & Service Fees Budget Committee develops an annual budget for the use of student Activity & Service fees (A and S Fees). For example, challenges we are currently encountering are deciding which of our programs may need more funding or which need budget cuts.

David Fortier, a student at Santa Fe College and member of PTK, and the honors society at Santa Fe College organized a school supplies drive for children in Gainesville, FL. who cannot afford school supplies. The committee was in charge of networking and advertising this need for school supplies for low-income families throughout campus and the Gainesville community.
